Small Business Saturday | Supporting Main Street

On the other side of the calendar, the emphasis turns to small businesses themselves. Small Business Saturday falls this year on Saturday, November 29, 2025.

This initiative, started by American Express in 2010, aims to spotlight independent businesses and encourage consumers to “Shop Small.”

What does that mean for NSBA members and small firms?

  • It’s a moment for your business to engage local customers, online or offline, and remind them of the value you bring to your community.

  • For small businesses in the tech supply chain, or service firms supporting larger providers (e.g., installation, logistics, maintenance), this may be a quieter shift in spotlight—but still an opportunity to highlight your partnership with the local economy.

  • American Express is also offering funding opportunities tied to this celebration: for example, the “Amex Shop Small Grants” program which may give small businesses up to $20,000 in support.

If you’re shopping for tech this holiday season

Consider leveraging major sale events like Dell’s Black Friday/Cyber Monday savings to upgrade your hardware. But balance price with durability, resale value, and business support.

If you’re a small business serving others

Use Small Business Saturday as a springboard—promote your services, highlight your relationship to local commerce, and position yourself in the broader conversation of supporting independent firms.

For all small businesses

Recognize the larger holiday-shopping ecosystem is not just about the big box stores. Whether you’re buying technology or delivering services, these calendar events provide strategic opportunities: procurement timing, promotional leverage, customer engagement moments.

Be mindful of timing

While Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals emphasize large-scale consumer electronics, your business needs may differ, like licensing/regulatory compliance, data security, longer useful life. Make sure your buying decision aligns with your business strategy.

Promote your participation!

If you participate in Small Business Saturday, market it: social media posts, email blasts, local partnerships. The more you raise awareness that you’re an independent business worth supporting, the greater the return on community goodwill.

As holiday-season deals open up, small businesses face a dual opportunity: buy smart on technology and be visible in local commerce with the Shop Small movement.

At NSBA, we believe independent firms deserve every chance to win, whether they’re investing in equipment or commanding attention in their communities.

Use the moment. Upgrade wisely. Engage locally. And remember: when small businesses thrive, entire communities thrive.
