President Biden and Vice President Harris continue to create opportunities for the small-business community.
This week, the nation celebrates National Small Business Week (NSBW) through May 6. This 60-year tradition celebrates the accomplishments and economic impacts of small-business owners across the country.
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) plays a central role in the formal celebration as SBA Administrator Isabella Guzman is leading national events for workshops, training, and local award ceremonies across the country.
Making up more than 99.9 percent of businesses in the U.S., small businesses are “the backbone of our economy and the glue of our communities,” President Biden said in his NSBW proclamation.
As part of NSBW, SBA’s small-business award winners from all 50 states were invited to the White House, where they were honored for their achievements and included in conversations on the President’s investments and reforms for this community.
These initiatives are aimed at strengthening guidance on regulatory and compliance policies, which, according to NSBA survey data, costs small-business owners more than $10,000 per employee annually.
President Biden and Vice President Harris also highlighted their efforts to revise Small-Business Lending Company (SBLC) qualifications, with the SBA recently finalizing a rule allowing the agency to issue new SBLC licenses for the first time in 40 years.
Honoring the impacts of small businesses to the economy and our nation’s social fiber, the celebration of small-business accomplishments is a core pillar of NSBW and an inspiration for NSBA’s own Advocate of the Year Awards.
