NSBA commends the Senate for working efficiently to ensure the SBA operates with required leadership.
This week, the U.S. Senate finally approved the nomination of Dilawar Syed to serve as Deputy Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).
Reported out more than two years since President Biden submitted his nomination, Mr. Syed’s confirmation was finally approved 10-9 by the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship before moving to the Senate floor. During floor negotiations, the Senate voted 54-44-2, with 5 Republicans voting in favor, to proceed to a full vote in the Senate. Though the cloture vote did have only modest bipartisan support, the full Senate ultimately approved the nomination under unanimous consent.
Mr. Syed’s nomination garnered broad support from the small-business community, including NSBA, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, U.S. Black Chambers, National Asian/Pacific Islander American Chamber of Commerce & Entrepreneurship, Small Business Roundtable, Small Business Majority, and more than 150 civic, government, higher education and business leaders and organizations.
NSBA President and CEO Todd McCracken weighed in on the confirmation, saying, “NSBA applauds the Senate’s confirmation of Dilawar Syed as SBA Deputy Administrator, and I look forward to working with Mr. Syed. We have been warning—for far too many years—that unfilled leadership positions at SBA hamstrings the agency and its ability to help small firms grow. We applaud the Senators of both parties who came together to move this nomination forward.”
